a cake baker

Cakes! Let’s face it, we all love them! Small ones, big ones, cream ones, iced ones and fruit flavoured ones, just to name a few. We’re a nation of cake lovers and now big baking fans too. However, we’ll always need someone to bake them and that’s where Suzy comes in. Her baking road started later in life and here’s her story and how she found cake baking love.

Suzy’s aim in life actually focussed towards the fact that she wanted to be an accountant, but after getting a baby sitting job at 16, she decided to go to college and get a NNEB (National Nursery Examination Board) certificate instead. The thought process behind that was clearly to work with children but also to combine travel too. With that in mind, once Suzy became qualified she registered with an agency that specialised in overseas contract work. That took Suzy all over the world. From the US to Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia Thailand and Europe. I can’t believe anyone would ever get fed up of traveling and working overseas but Suzy decided to return home.

Once home, she set up her first business running mobile crèche facilities for weddings and conferences etc.
With it being a new business she needed a part time job at the beginning to support her income and started washing dishes in a large multiple cafe business in Bristol. She discovered that she was enjoying the work in the cafe more than the childcare. It reminded her of travelling again, meeting people etc. So, she sold her business and pursued a role within that cafe and shortly after became the cafes General Manager.

“I enjoyed baking at the cafes so thought I would give it a go as a business”

So how did Suzy finally find herself living in Cornwall? Well, like a few of us, she met someone. That was Bob.
He originally studied in Falmouth and wanted to return to Cornwall, so the pair of them upped sticks and moved down here. Suzy continued to work with the same cafe company for some time based in Truro. Her and Bob then started a family, changed direction on the employment front, moved away again but the draw back to Cornwall was just too strong, so she returned home.

Once back in Cornwall, her business mind started to work again on thoughts of what she might do .
She told me “I wanted something I felt would fit around caring for my two sons. I enjoyed baking at the cafes in the past so thought I would give it a go as a business”. She then started baking from her kitchen at home. She’d bake through the night whilst her family slept. Soon she outgrew her home kitchen within 3 months so the next step for her was to go full time and get her own unit and that’s where we find her today. Suzy has now been running her successful business since 2015 and is well established in St Agnes.

Like everyone else, I love cakes too. I was hoping that Suzy might offer me the chance to sample some of her wears the day I visited. That certainly came true and they were bloody lovely. Thank you Suzy for taking the time to feed me, oh and of course allowing me to document you on what you do so well…..RD
